There are a plethora of online teaching opportunities available to us. In fact, the maximum number of online courses that a person can realistically handle depends on your specific goals. I have a friend who earned more than $260,000 in one year solely as an adjunct professor. However, he was a workaholic who did not have a much of a life outside of his work. The maximum number of classes I taught at one time was 23. I did not enjoy the experience and did not chose to teach this number of courses again. Thus, the number of classes you teach depends on you. There are three main factors that regulate the number of courses you would teach at any given time. These are desire, goals, and organization.
For me, teaching 15 to 17 courses a semester is sufficient to achieve my financial goals. It is equivalent to a sixty-hour workweek. Many people do not wish to put in this much time and effort. They do not have the desire to earn the income that can be achieved through teaching additional courses. Adjunct professors frequently do not set monetary goals for themselves. They do not seek out additional teaching assignments. Instead they just accept courses when they are offered. They do not realize that their financial destiny is in their hands. As an adjunct professor, it is important to set goals for yourself. When you do, opportunities present themselves to you.
The secret to online teaching success is organization. Compiling “To-Do” lists and setting regular working hours is a necessity. Every part of your day should be organized in such a way as to maximize your ability to get the job done. The more efficient you are, the less time it will take to teach the courses effectively. This will free up more time for leisure activities and will provide an opportunity to teach additional courses if you choose to do so. Once you get in the swing of teaching courses online, you can develop methods to increase your efficiency. However, in the beginning you should concentrate on learning the system, not on developing efficient methods. This should be an enjoyable and rewarding experience, not pure drudgery.
